Highlights
Anchorage, Denali National Park, Seward, Kenai Fjords National Park, Homer, Kachemak Bay State Park
Discover the final American frontier of Alaska. A must-see for adventure seekers, explore the pristine national parks abundant with wildlife and coastal towns rich in American Indian culture. Take the Alaska Rail scenic train ride for breathtaking sights or hike on foot to the largest glaciers in North America. From the soaring mountaintops to low land fjords and valleys – Alaska is one of the most remote and remarkable wilderness destinations in the world.
Day 1 Arrival Anchorage
Today we will arrive in Anchorage at any time, where we will be met at the airport and transferred to our hotel. There are no planned activities, so check into the hotel and head out to explore the city.
Day 2 Denali National Park (B)
After breakfast, we will depart to Denali National Park. Denali is the Athabascan name for Mt. McKinley, meaning “the high one”, as it is North America's highest mountain at 20,320 feet tall. After checking into the hotel we will visit the park information center and take a short hike around beautiful Carlo Creek to absorb the surroundings! Some members of the group will have the opportunity to go on an optional flight over glaciers to Mount McKinley.
Day 3 Denali National Park (B,L)
This morning we will take a shuttle bus into Denali National Park, for a park tour and wildlife viewing with an expert park guide. We will also have the option of stopping to take short hikes along the way. Be sure to keep our eyes peeled for caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, moose, Dall sheep, lynx, marmots, fox and snowshoe hares. Many of the park’s birds only visit during the summer months, but year-round residents include ravens, great horned owls and three species of ptarmigan.
Day 4 Denali National Park / Anchorage (B)
This morning we will visit the Denali National Park kennel and dog sled teams. We will learn all about this historic and still relied upon form of transportation in the north, as well as have the chance to walk around and interact with some of the dogs. A winter camp will be set up, including wall tent and small wood stove, so we will get a sense of life on the winter trail. In the early afternoon we will depart for Anchorage on the Alaska railway. Our train will travel south through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, making stops in the frontier towns of Talkeetna and Wasilla. Here we will enjoy the breathtaking views as we will pass glacier-sculpted valleys, deep gorges, lush landscapes and of course, Alaska’s unique wildlife.
Day 5 Seward (B)
After breakfast we will travel to Seward to discover the incredibly stunning Kenai Fjords National park. We will explore Seward by foot heading down to the marina to see the fishing boats and their catches of the day. Later that day, we will take a scenic boat tour of the harbor and bay searching for puffins, cormorants and Stellar sea lions as we will cruise along the spectacular shores of Resurrection Bay.
Day 6 Seward (B,L)
Today we will visit Kenai Fjords National Park where we will take a morning hike through cottonwood forests to Glacier View, a panoramic vista of the Exit Glacier spilling down from the Harding Icefield. In the afternoon we will return to Seward for free time to do some optional activities including hiking, sea kayaking or cruising along the shores of Kenai Fjords and glaciers.
Day 7 Homer (B)
Today we will visit the Kenaitze North American Indian Tribe. The Kenaitze American Indian Tribe and the Seward Ranger District of the Chugach National Forest work together to preserve, protect and interpret important cultural and natural resources in the Cooper Landing area. Our afternoon drive will continue along the Sterling highway offering a terrific view of Skilak lake. In the afternoon we will arrive in Homer, the "halibut fishing capital of the world", a quaint town nestled on the shore of Kachemak Bay offering breathtaking views of glaciers, mountains and wildlife.
Day 8 Homer (B,L)
An early morning boat ride will take us 8 miles (13 km) away from Homer, to the opposite side of Kachemak bay. Here, we can enjoy a hike along a portion of the Grewingk Glacier trail or we have the options to take part in various optional activities such as volcano flight-seeing or fly-in bear watching. Back to Homer at the end of the day.
Day 9 Anchorage (B)
Today we will transfer to Anchorage and enjoy the afternoon at our leisure to explore the town.
