Day 1 Arrive Buenos Aires

Welcome to Buenos Aires! There are no planned activities, so check into the hotel and enjoy the city. The city is comprised of a number of distinct neighborhoods, a highlight is a visit to the San Telmo weekend antique market and street artist displays. When we are done exploring, we will enjoy a drink in one of the many sidewalk cafes. In the evening we will meet your fellow group members to go over the details of our trip.

Day 2-3 Buenos Aires (2B)

Explore the city on a morning walking tour of Buenos Aires. Our experienced guide will uncover the diverse culture and history shown in this ‘Paris of South America’. Wander the pedestrian walkways and see some dancing in the streets in this most European of Latin cities. We will enjoy a free afternoon to enjoy the delights that Buenos Aires has to offer, including the cafe culture and endless streets of shopping. Day three provides us some free time for optional activities. Later in the day we will get to "discover" the true Buenos Aires and the passion of Tango. In the early evening we transport you to one of the oldest Tangueras in Buenos Aires where we will begin by tasting some prize winning Argentine wines with an expert sommelier. This is the perfect courage builder for the Tango lesson which is to follow. Expert dancers from the show will take us through the basic steps. Once we have built up an appetite it is time to try the famed Argentine "Bife de Chorizo" whilst watching how this passionate and complicated dance is brought to life on the stage.

Day 4-5 Esteros del Iberá (3B,1L,2D)

Today, we will fly from Buenos Aires to the city of Posadas. From Posadas, we transfer off the beaten path to the small community of Carlos Pellegrini, our lodge and home base for the next day's activities. The Esteros del Iberá is the largest reserve of fresh water in Argentina. With luck and the help of our experienced guide we may see some of the reserve's most famous residents: the howler monkey, marsh deer, capybara, neotropical otter and maned wolf. The area also boasts 300 different species of bird, muscovy ducks, lizards and caymans. At the end of our walk, we will be welcomed back with a traditional Argentinian BBQ. On day 5, we wake up early to optimize your possibilities to see the wildlife. We will head out in the boat with our expert guide and get our cameras ready for the caimans, capybaras and hundreds of birds that make this beautiful wetland their home. In the afternoon, we will head out for a horse ride to the Esteros and Palmares and get an experience of how the gauchos correntinos (local cowboys) lead their lives.

Day 6-8 Foz do Iguaçu (3B)

Prepare for a long day as we travel by 4x4 jeeps from the lodge to Posadas, and by van to Foz do Iguaçu, stopping at the Jesuit ruins of San Ignacio and Santa Ana along the way. On days 7 and 8 we will take a guided tour the falls from both the Brazilian and Argentine sides. Tours utilize trails and catwalks adapted to the landscape of the area and walking is easy for all ages. Due to the high humidity caused by the spray the vegetation is rich and varied, ranging from semi deciduous to tropical, with orchids growing next to pines and bamboos next to palm trees. Experience an exhilarating optional boat tour or helicopter trip for a bird's eye view, or simply marvel at nature’s breadth and the roar of the falls. There will also be some free time to explore on our own and visit Itaipú Dam - the second largest hydroelectric complex in the world.

Day 9-11 Paraty (3B,1L,1D)

Today, we will fly from Foz to Sao Paulo and continue onward by bus to the gorgeous coastal town of Paraty. On Day 10, we will 'discover' the real Brazil. We will visit the home of family Goncalves Amaral where the same family has been living for the past 140 years. Sit back and make new friends while we enjoy a traditional Brazilian style churrasqueria (BBQ) and other Brazilian treats. Before arriving to the house, we will visit a traditional cachaça distillery, learning the process of how this popular alcohol is distilled from fermented sugarcane juice. On day 11, we are free to participate in optional activities. Wander the cobblestone streets, take a boat trip to the nearby islands in the bay, or visit one of the many white sand beaches that make Brazil famous.

Day 12-13 Rio de Janeiro (2B)

A dramatic road takes us north from the port along the coast through superb scenery before rounding the cliffs at Vidigal, where we will get our first glimpse of one of the most memorable cities in the world, Brazil’s ocean-side jewel, Río de Janeiro. On day 13, we will have a full day to explore the enchanting city of Rio. Our tour takes us to the famous sites such as 'Sugar Loaf', 'Christ the Redeemer' and the 'Maracana' Football Stadium. In the afternoon, we will experience the alternative 'city tour' in the Favela of Rocihna. The city remained the capital until 1960, when it was replaced by Brasilia. Today, Río is a magnet for tourists who come to walk the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana and partake in the Carioca zest for life and Carnival.
